Course Description: This course applies the concepts of problem analysis to the field of school welfare. The course focuses on analysis of factors in the school's environment that militate against effective learning and considers the school social worker's role in creating a conducive and stimulating school environment. Topics include education policies and programs, access issues, participation equality, and school management; the ecological perspective of social work; the function of school social workers; the function and focus of schools and education in Ghana; the history of education in Ghana; problems in Ghanaian schools, including enrollment, retention, participation, learning outcomes, truancy, drug use, and sexual harassment; student and system focused interventions; children with disabilities and special education; vulnerable and excluded children: girls, migrant children, abused and neglected children, children with AIDS, orphans, street children, problem children, and child laborers; advocating and lobbying for school reform; and involving parents and the community in addressing school problems. Assessment: attendance and participation (10%), group project (40%), presentation (20%), final exam (30%).
