Course Description: | In the African worldview, dance is a channel of individual and community healing. African conceptualizations of illness and health integrate social, spiritual, physical and mental realms, all of which are impacted by trauma. This course examines the relationship between dance, ritual, and art through diverse cultures. It provides examples of African dance healing practices -- from the Akom, Tigari, Yeve and many more from Ghana. Egungun mask and Gelede Masquerade ritual dances of Nigeria, the Prophetic Healers of Malawi, Ndeup ritual in Senegal and Zar tradition in North Africa are also covered. The course interrogates asks how has dance been used in rituals related to spiritual beliefs, healing, the life cycle, political power, social cohesion, and personal identity? What is the process by which dance embodies, represents, or transforms spiritual and other beliefs in rituals? These and other questions are addressed through lectures, class discussions, films, and class seminars. |
