Course Description:
This course introduces developments in the Early Church that existed between the first and sixth centuries. These include the church's relationship with the Roman authorities, the General Public and some of the Church's members. The course also examines the role of African Church Fathers in this period. Topics: Roman setting and the beginnings of the Church; Christianity and the Roman Empire; attacks on Christianity and the work of the Apologists; religious movements and personalities; Asceticism and Monasticism; and Christianity in North Africa.
