Course Description: The course utilizes a variety of sources such as literary, philosophical, and political works to provide an introduction to the development in intellectual, political, philosophical, religious, social, and cultural ideas of Europe from the enlightenment. Instead of presenting a comprehensive survey, covering every aspect of this vast subject, this course takes a topical approach by focusing on a selection of themes and issues that are crucial to developing an understanding of the intellectual ideas that shaped the historical development of the political, economic, social, and cultural institutions of Europe from the enlightenment. Themes surveyed in the course include: development of enlightenment and its implications for political, social, economic, and religious thought in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries.
