Course Description: The first part of the course provides a general introduction to social theory around the theme of structure, agency, and culture and deals with a selection of theories to illustrate the range and diversity of social theories. The focus is on modern and contemporary social theory with the main emphasis on mid to late 20th-century theories. The second part of the course focuses on the ideas of selected scholars in their historical milieu and simultaneously makes the theorists dialogue over the theme “Dynamics of Power and Resistance”. Theorists examined include Hobbes, Locke, J.S. Mill, Gramsci, Foucault, Certeau, Scott, Abu-Lughod, Mahmood, Said, Senghor, and Fanon. Assessment: Coursework (50%), final exam (50%).
