Course Description: This course introductes the broad field of chordate biology using a comparative approach. It begins with the evolution of marine protochordates through to the terrestrial vertebrates with mammals as the pinnacle. The course provides understanding of the factors contributing to dominance of the various habitats of the world by this group of animals. The focus is on comparisons of morphology, biology, and ecology, with specific attention to physiology. Special topics like bird flight, communication and migration, as well as toxicology of snakes, are emphasized.
