Course Description: | This introduction to journalism course examines the encoding and decoding of print and online media texts in the English speaking world. The course discusses descriptive, discursive, and tendentious news, press practice, and readership expectations. The course utilizes various hermeneutics to explore these phenomena in terms of ideology and power. In practice-based research, students write publishable English texts in the ostensibly balanced and objective genres of news reports, profiles, and features, along with the overtly opinionated genres of leading articles and editorials, columns, and reviews. Students are required to participate in cultural events at their own expense, contact subjects and arrange interviews, buy occasional copies of international newspapers, and follow the news daily. The course requires the completion of one upper division humanities course a prerequisite. |
