Course Description: This course offers a study of physical chemistry. The course discusses a quantitative description of physical, chemical, and some biological processes and properties, and explores topics including quantum chemistry, thermodynamics, and statistical mechanics. Quantum chemistry examines chemical bonding and molecular geometry using the quantum-mechanical concept of wave functions and energy levels derived from the Schrödinger equation. While the first and second laws of thermodynamics can be used to predict the occurrence of macroscopic processes, statistical mechanics provides the link with microscopic models of matter. Students work in pairs to write an essay and give a presentation on a selected topic. This course requires that students have completed select math and science courses as prerequisites, please see the course webpage for additional information.
