Course Description: This course offers an introduction to research and education methodologies in the humanities. The course is split into two parts, approaches to the humanities, and propositional logic and discourse. The first part of the course introduces crucial research methods and methodologies across the humanities including literature, art, film, history, and culture. The second part of the course explores basic concepts of logic and pragmatics that can be applied to the interpretation and evaluation of discourse, and puts these concepts into practice. The course discusses topics including the symbolism and concepts of propositional logic, techniques that can demonstrate the validity of arguments, pragmatic considerations that can influence the effectiveness of arguments in discourse, the logical relations that can exist between statements with logical proofs, and basic tools of pragmatic analysis. Students participate in class discussions, exercises, seminars, presentations, and an in class exam. Students are required to complete a five week module immediately following the completion of this course.
