Course Description: This is a survey of the religious traditions of Japan aimed at identifying and defining the most characteristic aspects of Japanese thought and belief. The course studies the traditions of Shinto, Buddhism, Confucianism, and popular religions in their historical context to understand the ways that they have influenced Japan’s development. Texts and some video materials are used to promote class discussion. Participation is an important element of the course. Assessment: participation, writing assignment, final exam.
