Course Description: This course examines the roles of protected areas in contemporary approaches to conservation and land management. It also explores ecosystems and bioregions as the basis for establishment of protected area systems. It focuses on protected area management systems and approaches and understanding the social and ecological linkages between protected areas and surrounding landscapes and communities. Students learn how to manage the interactions between protected areas and resident and local communities, and apply the concepts of adaptive management and ecosystem management to protected areas.
