Course Description: This seminar course introduces advanced topics related to the interplay between societies and education with a comparative and international perspective. Globalization is discussed in order to examine the relationship between education and society, especially in the Asian region. Topics: colonial education in Asia (Korea, The Philippines, Taiwan); formal, non-formal, and informal education in Asia (Japan, Korea); cramming, corruption, and equality in Asia (Cambodia, Japan, Korea); history of higher education in Asia (China, Japan, Korea); internationalization of higher education in Asia (Japan, Korea); multicultural and minority education in Asia (Cambodia, Japan, Korea); official development assistance (Cambodia); comparison of East Asian donors (China, Korea, Japan). Assessment: Reading presentation (25%), midterm paper (25%), final paper (25%), presentation (25%). Attendance: You will not receive credit for this class if you are absent for more than one-third of the classes.
