Course Description: This course is an introduction to basic theories and perspectives from the social sciences relevant to an understanding of the role of education in society. Major research work concerning the social importance of education is reviewed from the perspectives of history, philosophy, and the sociology of education. The first half of the class covers philosophy of education and learning in pre-modern societies and the origins and history of early-modern public education systems with a focus on North America and Europe. The second half of the course focuses on the role of education in present-day societies with a discussion of issues relevant to future educators and citizens. Throughout the course the class discusses the readings and lecture material in order to understand the different ways in which education has been conceptualized as a part of the human experience.
