Course Description: This course explores the nature of democracy and capitalism in Japan, using history and culture of the Japanese people as a guide for understanding Japan today. Specifically, the course looks into how and when so-called unique features of the Japanese-style capitalism arose and how they shaped postwar Japan. In order to understand the nature and dynamics of the contemporary social, political, economic, and security relations in the Asia-Pacific, the course also explores historical intercultural communication between Westerners and Asians, as well as among the Asian nations and cultures before European hegemony in Asia. Assessment: midterm exam (30%), final exam (35%), presentation (35%).
