Course Description: This advanced phonetic and phonology course starts by reviewing classical taxonomic phonology and then proceed to study modern phonological theories. The course also covers practical phonetics, and students practice producing speech sounds of languages spoken in the world based on the IPA. Examples are mainly presented from English and Japanese in order to help students to understand the theories, but examples from various other languages are also used to further explain the theoretical concepts. Students are expected to know basic phonetics and phonology. The course presents current phonetic and phonological theories to understand relevant academic papers, and how to analyze actual language data and interpret the results using the theories/ Prerequisites CO201 Introduction to Language Studies, CO321 English Phonetics and Phonology, CO322 Japanese Phonetics and Phonology, or equivalent courses offered in other faculties or universities. Assessment: mini-tests (30%), final written exam (70%).
