Course Description: The course traces the history of modern Western philosophy from Descartes to Hegel, and gives special attention to the work Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel. It emphasizes central topics facing those philosophers and the spirit of modern Western philosophy, namely reason and enlightenment. The course provides a broad background in the history of Western philosophy, preparing for advanced work in contemporary Western philosophy.
