Course Description: This course examines opera history from late 16th century to 20th century. The course highlights and analyzes selected works from many well-known composers in different periods with different styles. This course introduces the content of the opera, composers, historical background, drama factor and music means in detail. The course beings with operas by Mozart (Magic Flute, Don Giovanni) and moves on to Weber to examine the differences between romanticism and classicism. The course examines Italian opera by Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini as well as the 18th and 19th century French operas. Students closely examine Verdi (Rigoletto, Othello), Wagner (Tristan and Isolde), Puccini (Tosca, Madama Butterfly) and Pagliacci. The course also looks at nationalism in opera; grand opera vs. operetta; impressionist opera; expressionist opera; modern opera; musicals; Broadway and British musicals. Assessment: Midterm essay, final exam.
