Course Description: The course is devoted to Dante's literary production and THE DIVINE COMEDY. Teaching is conducted through close readings of the text and analysis of questions relating to philology, linguistics, rhetoric, historical and cultural factors, and intertextual elements. The course is an introduction to the COMMEDIA: INFERNO, PURGATORIO, AND PARADISO with particular attention to key cantos. Inferno: 1, 2, 4, 5, 11, 26, 34; Purgatorio: 1, 3, 9, 10, 17, 22, 30; Paradiso: 1, 2 (vv. 1-45), 4 (vv. 1-63), 11, 17, 25, 30, 33. Required reading includes COMMEDIA by Dante Alighieri and DANTE by G. Ledda. Students are also required to read two essays in Italian from a list provided by the course instructor. Assessment is based on final oral exam. Students who elect to submit a research paper are awarded 1 extra unit for a maximum of 6 quarter units.
