Course Description: This is a graduate level course that is part of the Laurea Magistrale program. The course is intended for advanced level students only. Enrollment is by consent of the instructor. The course has two parts, A and B. Students must take both parts. No partial credit possible. Students who complete a term paper on a pre-approved topic are awarded one extra unit for a total of 4 units. Maximum units for the course, A and B, are 8. The course focuses on languages as cultural features linking human communities to their territories, history, and geopolitical evolution. Special attention is placed on the changes that have occurred in the spatial dimension of languages in connection to acculturation processes and linguistic policies. The course deals with the regional division of the European languages and with the EU language policy both with respect to minority languages and to the process of linguistic education of its citizens. The relationship between linguistic diversity and biological diversity is also explored with a geographical focus on the issue of language death. Students receiving credit in the field of Italian studies are required to focus on Italy’s minority languages and dialects and Italian legislation – both national and regional - regulating the use of minority languages and dialects vis-à-vis standard Italian. Students study the role of the 12 languages officially recognized by the Italian state including Griko, Ladin, Slovene, and Sardinian, and the trend in the last 150 years towards standard Italian. Students also focus on the predicted “death” of minority languages and dialects.
