Course Description:
The course has two parts, A and B. Students must take both parts. No partial credit possible. Students who complete a term paper on a pre-approved topic are awarded one extra unit for a total of 4 units. Maximum units for the course, A and B, are 8. The course requires previous knowledge of Theoretical Linguistics. The course is intended for advanced level students in linguistics. This course explores historical linguistics and mechanisms of language change. Topics include the description and the interpretation of the phenomena of phonetic, morphological, syntactic, and semantic change that characterize the diachronic development of Romance and Germanic languages.
