Transcript Title: DETECTIVE FICTION
UC QTR Units - Division: 6.0 - Upper Division
Course Description: This course explores English and American detective fictions from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day, and focuses on the ways in which this popular genre both reflects and challenges social values, including views of gender, class, ethnicity, and education, and critical discourses, such as narrative, epistemology, and hermeneutics. The amount of reading for the course is suitably heavy and several of the set texts are demanding in terms of length, style, and philosophy. The course examines the social significance of the various modes of discourse to be found within the genre, most particularly with reference to English notions of class structure and cultural history. The primacy of the deductive method and the role it plays in the moral ratification of modern scientific ideas about causality are considered. The course touches upon developments in contemporary English detective fiction. The latter part of the course considers American crime fiction, especially the so-called “hard-boiled” variety, wherein assumptions of moral and epistemic certainty are questioned more fundamentally. A wide range of secondary readings provide students with cultural and theoretical frameworks through which to investigate the social and critical contexts of the genre. Prerequisites for this course include basic knowledge of the prescribed test and some knowledge of modern literary and cultural history, particularly with respect to the detective genre.
