Course Description: This course explores thematic issues which highlight the role of language variation as a resource, and a locus of conflict, within intercultural communication. Themes include pragmatics and cultural norms, language spread and shift, language attitudes, nativeness, and language standards. Lectures and workshops are organized around two different focal points: language contact and conflict in world Englishes and the spread and use of world Englishes in popular music. In addition to writing an exam essay on one of the issues above, students are required to give one or more presentations on these topics. Students take part in a final in which they apply their theoretical knowledge of sociolinguistic variation to specific varieties of English.
