Course Description: The course provides an overview of general theories of language change based on different approaches to language. It discusses Invisible Hand explanations, evolutionary approaches as well as generative approaches. The course investigates specific major grammatical and semantic changes that occurred in the history of the English language. These changes are analyzed with respect to grammaticization, reanalysis, and language contact. Language evolution and language change are closely related to the development of pidgins and creoles. Thus, the lecture looks at two Creole languages (Tok Pisin and Patois) and discusses pidginization and Creolization theories.
