Course Description:
Competence in performance was vitally important in the middle ages. This course covers medieval narrative performance and its devices, the role of the performer and audience, the wide range of medieval English performance traditions and the cultural and historical contexts in which they occurred. The literary genres under discussion are fabliaux, exempla, debate poems, songs, and plays.
