Course Description: | This course covers the multitude of literary genres that have produced erotic pieces: be it the Roman love story, the strict sonnet, mystical tracts, or the rough and vulgar. They all satisfy a need for intimate expressions: those of the languishing citizen, the godly nun, as well as that of the noble knight. These expressions have an etymology, which are explored in this seminar. Although the focus is on the Middle Ages, the course builds a bridge from antiquity to the early modern period and looks at as many different genres as languages and cultural contexts. Prominent names such as Ovid, Boccaccio, and Shakespeare are covered, in addition to lesser-known names such as Mechthild of Magdeburg and Richard de Fourniva. A tutorial on abnormal erotica is offered in conjunction with this class, but is optional. |
