Course Description:
This course examines classical questions of metaphysics such as: does free will exist; how do body and mind relate to each other; what does it mean that something is necessary, or that one event causes another; are there abstract objects, such as numbers or properties, in addition to concrete, tangible things like tables and trees; how can concrete things continue to exist over time as they continue to change. The interrelation of these questions (and what makes them specifically "metaphysical" questions) is another question discussed in this course. The lecture addresses classical texts and positions in the history of philosophy, but focuses on contemporary metaphysics.
