Course Description: This course is designed as an introduction to Buddhist philosophy. It examines fundamental concepts of Buddhist thought in early Buddhism, and analyzes the meaning of “no-self” from the viewpoint of “mind-only” in Mahayana Buddhism. In order to understand characteristic features of Buddhist thought, the course also examines brahmanical philosophy and Chinese thought. The objective of the course is to understand the basic way of thinking in Buddhist religion and thought by means of reading original texts translated into English. Text: Peter Harvey: AN INTRODUCTION TO BUDDHISM; and various references. Assessment: final exam (70%) and class participation (30%).
