Course Description: In the modern era, Japanese thought has been significantly influenced by European philosophy and thought. In this course, students examine modern, contemporary European philosophy and thought, while examining the possibility of new philosophical prospect in our contemporary situation. Furthermore, the course explores phenomenology and the existential philosophy of European philosophy. In the course, students read several texts of modern great philosophers and examine the essence of their thoughts. Texts: PHENOMENOLOGY OF MIND by Georg Whilhelm Friedrich Hegel; THE WILL TO POWEER by Friedrich Nietzsche; IDEAS by Edmund Husserl; BEING AND TIME by Martin Heidegger. Assessment: midterm exams, papers, final exam, in-class performance, and reading assignment test and presentation.
