Course Description: This is a graduate level course that is part of the Laurea Magistrale program. The course is intended for advanced level students only. Enrollment is by consent of the instructor. Students who complete a final paper on a pre-approved topic are awarded 1 extra unit. Maximum units for this course are 6. The course focuses on some of the global challenges the population of the planet has been facing since the second half of the twentieth century. Among these, the critical relationship with natural resources and the concept of development and, above all, climate change, with its links to territorial development, ecological risk, food security, and the consumption of natural resources. The course focuses on the theoretical and empirical tools necessary to critically analyze the global strategies of climate resilience and cooperation, and the relation between climate change and tourism. Students are expected to work in groups and contribute to class discussions. The focus is on the global dynamics connected to climate change, globalization, poverty, development, and tourism. Students receiving credit in the field of Italian Studies are required to choose a tourist site in Italy that is at risk given factors related to environmental and climate changes, ecological fragility, excessive tourism due to globalizations trends, and impact on the local community. Instructor will assign additional readings.
