UC QTR Units - Division: 5.0 - Upper Division
Course Description: The course has two parts, A and B. Generally students are required to take both parts. Students may be permitted to take part A only by special permission. Maximum units for the course, A and B, are 10. The course focuses on the main positions related to the issue of human knowledge over philosophical thought, especially in the modern and contemporary age. The phenomenological and epistemological perspectives which show the relationship between philosophy, logic, and psychology, have particular significance. Topics include the various theories of abstraction and concept formation; the understanding of notions of truth, coherence, correspondence, and epistemic justification; the discussion of the philosophical problem of skepticism; the investigations about the functions of language and the semiological aspects of epistemological research. The purpose of the course is also to connect the different theories of knowledge to the philosophical-metaphysical assumptions and to the concepts of experience without neglecting the shapes of the vital contexts (social , ethical, and cultural) in which these notions are placed. Assessment is based on a final oral examination devised to assess comprehension of course materials and readings.
