Country - Partner Institution - Programs: United Kingdom - England - London School of Economics - 'London School of Economics'
UC Course SubjectMathematics
Number & Suffix: 157
Full UC Title: OPTIMIZATION THEORY
Transcript Title: OPTIMIZATION THEORY
UC QTR Units - Division: 6.0 - Upper Division
Course Description: The course explores various techniques of optimization, gives a mathematical presentation of the relevant theory, and shows how they can be applied. It examines the relevant mathematical background, looking at combinatorial optimization. Students explore the shortest paths in directed graphs, alongside algorithms and their running time. They examine optimization theory further, including classical results on continuous optimization, Weierstrass's Theorem on continuous functions on compact set, optimization of differentiable functions on open sets, Lagrange's Theorem on equality constrained optimization, and Kuhn and Tucker's Theorem on inequality constrained optimization. The course also explores linear programming and duality theory.
