Course Description: The course has two parts, A and B. Students must take both parts. No partial credit possible. Maximum units for the course, A and B, are 10. The course covers the main theories and methodological approaches to the study of the family; the family institution and its cultural and structural transformations, with particular attention to relations between gender and relationships between generations; theoretical and empirical tools necessary to understand and analyze the main problems of today‚Äôs family, including those for analyzing "family responsibilities" and social services in Italy and in Europe; the main interpretative models of processes and educational institutions; areas of study and research in the field of sociology of education; methods and research techniques for analyzing processes and emerging training systems in the contemporary global society. Part A analyzes the transformations of the contemporary family as documented in recent demographic phenomena including the decline and the postponement of marriages; the overall declining birth rate; the increase in cohabitation and births out of wedlock; the increase in marital instability; an increase in households with a single parent; the increase in blended families; and the increase in single person households. It also explores the issue of parenting and in particular the role of fathers in ancient and contemporary societies, and the relationship between generations.
