Course Description: | The course is part of the Laurea Magistrale program: Master in Innovation and Organization of Culture and the Arts. Exchange students are permitted to take the course with instructor consent. Students who are not part of the “GIOCA” program are evaluated on a P/NP basis only. The course focuses on managerial and organizational methodology in the film and multimedia sector. The course covers the following: a national and international overview of the film industry and its players; basic movie production, pre-production, production and post production; the roles of producers and distributors in the market. Additional specific topics covered include: commerce and art in the film marketplace; the relationship between between business and art, content, and promotion; the bottom line and award accolades; the reality behind big budget art. The course also details the life of two fundamentally different film products: independent films and studio films. The course covers the process from inception to final net revenue reality. Students are introduced to basic aspects of development, finance, production, marketing, and distribution through two roles: producer and studio executive. The course focuses on the U.S. production distribution studio machine as the primary market muscle for the largest product.
