Course Description: This course exposes the coalition of internal and external forces that impact on rural development in Ghana and in other African countries. Topics; imperatives for rural development in Africa; development and underdevelopment in history and theory; historical perspective of state and rural development in Ghana; microcredit schemes as catalysts for rural development; population, health and development in Ghana; state, education and rural development; mining industry and rural development; district assemblies and rural development; role of chieftaincy in rural development; critique of selected rural development projects and policies in Africa; and the role of women in rural development. Along with assigned texts, students are expected to access information from the Internet including local government web sites.
