Course Description:
This course introduces a wide range of psychological disturbances in humans. Focus is on abnormal behaviors in society and their underlying causes. Topics: definition and concepts of abnormal behavior; historical perspective of abnormal behavior and treatment in Europe and Africa; modern perspective of abnormal behavior; theories and models of abnormal behavior; anxiety disorder and treatment; defense mechanisms; dissociative disorders; mood disorders and treatment; sexual dysfunction; sexual deviant behaviors; substance related disorders; childhood disorders; research methods in abnormal behavior; mental illness and the law; and ethical issues.
