Course Description: The course explores the cultural dynamics that led to the state formation of Africa, urbanism, and other aspects of African civilization, before the advent of European colonialism. Drawing on archaeology and related disciplines, the course focuses on selected kingdoms and their urban centers that evolved in different ecological zones in African. Topics include civilizations of the Nile Valley, the Bantu question, civilizations of the western Sudan, the east African coast before 1500, and kingdoms of the east African hinterland. Assessment: attendance at lectures and tutorials, term essays, and a final exam.
