Course Description: This seminar explores the issues of class and social stratification in contemporary Japan in reference to personal considerations such as gender, education, family and occupational background, work-life experience, as these interact with state policies. Emphasis is on exploring both overt and covert factors in Japanese society that shape class structure in Japan, and which define who is to “rise”, and why some do not.
