Course Description: This course uses the study of kimono to increase understanding of the sense of beauty Japanese people have developed and cultivated over the centuries. The topics during the first part of the lectures include history and regional differences in textile materials of kimono. The course also teaches how to wear kimono to help understand various styles and way of wearing Kimono and significance of each variation. This course also offers field trips to local studios in Kyoto where Kyoto style of kimono and traditional fabrics are produced. Assessment: participation, small report, final report.
