Course Description: This course is an examination of how citizens engage with society and participate in politics; what they think about social and political issues at the grassroots, local and national levels. The topics covered include political participation; social engagement; public opinion. The public opinion and social engagement sections need not be about politics, but can be tailored to the students’ interests Students are expected to work independently on the lab exercises, but the final report may be a collaborative report on which each student writes a few sections (but reads, critiques and edits the whole document) to create a comprehensive account of specific aspects of public opinion and political engagement in a chosen set of democratic societies.
