Course Description: This course develops upper intermediate level proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students master 200 important sentence patterns of the intermediate level, 6000 basic words, and 1200 basic kanji; understand complicated sentence structures; and improve their ability to read written pieces. They learn conversational expressions necessary for daily situations, how to present opinions individually and in groups, and how to write simple papers and letters. The course also discusses current topics in Japanese society and culture. Text: NEW APPROACH CHUJYOKYU NIHONGO KANSEIHEN by Noboru Koyanagi. Assessment: attendance, class participation, and homework assignments (30%), quizzes (40%), and a final exam (30%). Note: Intermediate Japanese language levels at the host university are comparable to UC upper-division language courses.
