Course Description: This course improves reading comprehension of complicated passages and sentence structures. Students study different sentence structures and sentence patterns through various readings of literary works and newspaper articles. They learn to read accurately by paying attention to sentence structures. By the end of the course students master 6000 words and 1200 kanji. Assessment: attendance, class participation, homework assignments (30%), quizzes (20%), midterm exam (25%), final exam (25%). Note: Intermediate Japanese language levels at the host university are comparable to UC upper-division language courses.
