Course Description: This is a survey of basic theories in religious studies. The course covers methodology for understanding the phenomenon and nature of religion in relation to history, psychology, anthropology, sociology and theology. The first part offers a survey of some of the major Western theorists of religion (i.e., Marx, Freud, Nietzsche, Taylor, Frazer, Weber, Durkheim, James, etc.). In examining these influential thinkers, careful attention is paid to uncovering the insights and oversights found in their theories of religion. The second part of this course examines how these theories may be useful in understanding issues related to religion in the contemporary world.
