Course Description:
This course teaches anthropological approaches to thinking about belief and social change. Anthropology looks at beliefs and religions not as something merely personal but as something collective or social. Focus is on people’s everyday practices rather than systematic doctrines. From this perspective, various cases regarding symbolic boundary-making, the politics of identity, (post-) colonialism, and political movements are examined. How do people’s beliefs and practices generate social changes? How do social changes influence people’s beliefs and practices? This course explores such dynamic interactions between belief and society.
