Course Description: This course presents Japanese utilitarian arts based on the theory of Mingei. The course examines how fine art developed from ancient times, and how the traditional crafts and arts appeared in art history and struggled through the industrial revolution during the Meiji Era. The course includes visits to the Tokyo National Museum, Edo Tokyo Museum, and Japan Folk Crafts Museum to understand the aesthetic uses of the art and the way of life of the utilitarian people. Texts: THE UNKNOWN CRAFTSMAN by Soetsu YANAGI; BEYOND EAST AND WEST by Bernard Leach; and THE INLAND SEA by Donald Richie. Assessment: class attendance (60%) and papers (40%).
