Course Description: This course highlights some major aspects of Buddhism in Japan, while tracing the historical development of Buddhism in Japan by focusing on how the vast corpus of Buddhist teachings, which entered the Japanese archipelago in successive waves, had been adopted and adapted. More concretely, the course clarifies the major characteristics of the Buddhist philosophies that had been influential in Japan at one time, traces the interaction of Buddhism with other religions such as Shinto during the pre-modern period, and sheds light on the process of its development and transformation into the modern age.
