Course Description: The course is on Nara and Heian Period literature, specifically its language, plot construction, style of expression, and characterization. For this course, the main narrative form that is focused on is waka or poetry, and waka's role in the current social and societal conscious of Japan. The specific theme that focused on for this spring term is "color" and "wind". In addition to the course's focuses concerning waka, the course also focuses on non-traditional reading methods. A few examples of these reading methods are the focus on Japanese syllabary and deepening the understanding of such and the renewing a sense of understanding of waka and its present implications.
