Course Description: This course gives a general view of the Japanese language to both native and nonnative-Japanese students (the latter with the Japanese proficiency required for Japanese 3 in JLP or higher), covering characteristics of this language in such areas as sounds, words/expressions, grammar, writing, inter languages, etc.The purpose of this course is not to introduce linguistic jargon or concepts, but rather to give students a chance to experience a scientific attitude of approaching (linguistic) data and coming up with some solutions that make sense of the patterns observable from the data. This course also tries to illustrate Japanese in contrast with other languages (English, Korean, etc.). Students (native and nonnative) work in pairs/groups for problem-solving activities.
