Course Description: From the ancient to the Middle Ages to the early modern era, Japan has become cultivated in the arts as a member of the East Asian cultural sphere, with rich exchanges with China and Korea. Also, in modern times, we cannot ignore the influence from Europe and the United States. What has been selected and rejected from Japan, the arts of China, South Korea, Western countries as a foreign culture, digested and transformed--how Japan has created its own art? This course presents these concepts while presenting slides of paintings and designs to provide understanding of the historical process that has been formed in exchange with foreign countries (China, Korea, Europe and the United States). Assessment: Attendance and participation, periodic papers, quizzes.
