Course Description: This course explores the sociolinguistic relationship by examining various thought-provoking issues and perspectives in institutions such as schools, in cultural patterns and in social attitudes throughout Japan and the world. Despite its monolingual self-image, for one example, Japan is multilingual and growing more so due to indigenous minority language revitalization and as an effect of migration. For another, within critical theories of globalization, terms such as “World Englishes” and “English as a lingua franca” are gradually spreading trying to challenge a traditional notion of ‘English’. Yet, recognition of these concepts is still on a long way. In this course, the participants have an opportunity to acquire knowledge of basic concepts and theories of language ideology, language attitudes, linguistic minorities, language rights, English-only mentality, and World Englishes through individual/group presentations and group discussion based on their reading as well as follow-up lectures.
