Course Description: The development of the social and political life in the German Democratic Republic is discussed in this seminar on the basis of important GDR films from the start to the end of the GDR. Since film production in the GDR was subject to strict political and cultural regimentation and national censorship, these basic political conditions are also examined in the seminar. Students consider the way in which the self-image of the GDR and its change over time is designed through GDR film. Films discussed include DIE MÖRDER SIND UNTER UNS; BERLIN ECKE SCHÖNHAUSER; and DIE LEGENDE VON PAUL UND PAULA; among others.
